What is certification and how does it work?
Certification is a testing process that determines if an individual’s skills and knowledge meet or exceed a certain level of competence.

In February 2007, the Association for Challenge Course Technology (ACCT) approved standards for accredited vendors that offer challenge course practitioner certification. While the standards have been developed by ACCT, the certification is granted directly by Adventureworks.

Adventureworks! Associates, Inc. provides challenge course certification as part of our open enrolment courses – when you register for the training course, you are automatically registered for the certification testing that follows. Certification testing may also be offered as part of training at your site.

What is the difference between training and certification?
Training introduces the skills and knowledge required to lead effective programs. It’s the content teaching and learning that happens. Certification is a verification process. It’s the exam at the end of the course. The course has value without the exam, but the exam verifies that you learned the content.

Why become certified?
Certification has a number of benefits:

  • Internationally recognized (ACCT is an internationally recognized organization)
  • Transferrable – the certification belongs to you as an individual, not to your organization
  • Verifies that a candidate’s skills and knowledge meet the industry standard

Do I need to be certified?
It depends. Your employer may require certification as a condition of your employment or your organization may adhere to standards which require certified instructors. Training is what will prepare you for effective program leadership. Certification is the verification that the training “worked”.

What are the pre-requisites for certification testing? When can I take the test?
Certification testing is open to individuals who:

Level 1 Testing

  • Are 18 years old
  • Have completed a Level 1 training course

Level 2 Testing

  • Are 18 years old
  • Have completed a Level 2 training course
  • Have submitted a Challenge Course Portfolio (found on the registration page for your course) that documents 200 hours of program delivery

Course Manager Testing

  • Are 21 years old
  • Have completed a Level 2 training course
  • Have submitted a Challenge Course Portfolio (found on the registration page for your course) that documents 500 hours of relevant work experience

How do I pass the certification test?
To pass the test, you must:

  • Achieve greater than 80% on the written test
  • Demonstrate all required skills on the practical skills assessment

Any hints for passing the written test?

  • Take the course.
  • Study. Read your manual.
  • Pay attention in training.
  • Inform us in advance of any accommodation or modification for the written test that might be required. We want you to be successful!
  • Get all the answers right...

What do I get if I pass the certification testing?
You get a shiny new Certification Card from us (like the one at the top of this page!). It fits in your wallet and impresses your friends.

What happens if I fail the certification testing?
Two things can happen:

  • 1) If you passed ONE of the written or practical tests but failed the other you automatically qualify for a re-test. The re-test can happen at the next open-enrolment course. The re-test CANNOT happen on the same day as the original test.
  • 2) If you did not pass either the written test or the practical skills assessment then you will need to re-take the training course prior to re-trying the certification test.

I have lots of experience, can I skip the Level 1 or just show up for testing without attending the training?
Very unlikely. Complete a Challenge Course Portfolio, show us your skills and experience and we can recommend the best course of action. Certification has existed since 2007, those who qualify to be “grandfathered-in” have already been dealt with.

How long does certification last? How often do I need to re-certify?

  • Level 1: One year
  • Level 2: Three years
  • Course Manager: Five years

  • Can I re-certify without re-doing the entire training course?
Yes. Re-certification testing involves a written test and a practical skills assessment for the level you are re-certifying. Updated manuals are provided to re-certification candidates prior to the Testing Day. Please note that no training or instruction is provided during a Re-certification Testing Day.

Can I refresh my skills before I re-certify?
Yes. We offer a refresh option as part of each open-enrolment course. The 1-day refresh workshop is designed to update you on changing standards, practices, and operational procedures and prepare you for the both the written test and practical skills assessment. Refresher training is not available to individuals without certification.

How do I register for certification?
If training is happening at your site it may include certification. You do not need to register for the certification, but you may need to submit a Challenge Course Portfolio (Level 2 and Course Manager).
